For several years the fishermen of the West Indies have directed their activities towards new fishing grounds, notably the bathyales zones adjacent to island plateaux up to approximately 1000 metres in depth. Explorations earned out since 1989 have shown that diverse crustacean populations could be exploited. However, populations and exploitable stocks arc not well known. The use of crustaceans traps as a fishing technique permits the capture of shellfish, shrimps and prawns of which at least six species could have commercial interest. The main objective of this work is do draw up an inventory of the principal commercial species as well as the accompanying species belonging to the subordres Decapoda macrura, anomura, brachyura, and to the orders Isopoda... |

We assessed the preference of 10 fish species for depth and velocity conditions in forested streams from southeastern Brazil using habitat suitability criteria (HSC curves). We also tested whether preference patterns observed in forested streams can be transferred to deforested streams. We used data from fish sampled in 62 five-meter sites in three forested streams to construct preference curves. Astyanax altiparanae, A. fasciatus, Knodus moenkhausii, and Piabina argentea showed a preference for deep slow habitats, whereas Aspidoras fuscoguttatus, Characidium zebra, Cetopsorhamdia iheringi, Pseudopimelodus pulcher, and Hypostomus nigromaculatus showed an opposite pattern: preference for shallow fast habitats. Hypostomus ancistroides showed a multimodal... |

Today, it is common knowledge that environmental factors can change the color of many animals. Studies have shown that the molecular mechanisms underlying such modifications could involve epigenetic factors. Since 2013, the pearl oyster Pinctada margaritifera var. cumingii has become a biological model for questions on color expression and variation in Mollusca. A previous study reported color plasticity in response to water depth variation, specifically a general darkening of the nacre color at greater depth. However, the molecular mechanisms behind this plasticity are still unknown. In this paper, we investigate the possible implication of epigenetic factors controlling shell color variation through a depth variation experiment associated with a DNA... |

Compaction is one of the restricting factors in desirable seed germination and root growth. As a sign for soil compaction can be a criterion for optimal seed germination. Seeds require some compression of the surrounding soil at planting for optimum growth, which it is made by pressure wheels in planters. Travel speed and working depth affect the soil cone index. A field experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of the speed and working depth in the beginning of the autumn season. Experiments were performed in the form of factorial split-plot based on a randomized complete block design with two factors, the travel speed (3, 4, and 6 km/h) and working depth (3, 6, 9, 12 and 15 cm) in three replication. Digital cone Penetrometer was used for... |

ABSTRACT Marine sponges fulfill many critical functions to coral reefs. In turn, variations in the community structure of the poriferans may indicate changes in the environmental conditions of the ecosystems where they live. However, their study has been scarce in the Caribbean of Costa Rica, mainly in the ecological field. Therefore, the community structure of these organisms was evaluated in four reef patches (Perezoso, Pequeño, Coral Garden, and the 0.36) and it was determined whether it could be explained by sedimentation, substrate, and depth. Relative abundance (RA) and relative coverage (RC) for each species, sponge density, and diversity indices (species richness, Shannon heterogeneity, Pielou's evenness, and Simpson's dominance) were calculated... |

ABSTRACT: In Brazil, horseweed is one of the most important weeds because of the resistance to herbicides and high competitive for the crops. A large of losses were reported in major crops such as soybeans, wheat and corn, where the use a no-tillage system and the herbicide resistance promote better establishment. A correct understanding of the way temperature influences germination enables the prediction of the regions with the highest potential for colonization by this weed and thus facilitates its control. The objective of this study; therefore, was to discern the ways temperature affected the germination, viability and longevity of horseweed seeds. Testing was done at 10, 20 and 30°C, while evaluation occurred on days 0, 15, 30, 45 and 60. Seeds were... |

Mercury (Hg) is a global threat for marine ecosystems, especially within the Mediterranean Sea. The concern is higher for deep-sea organisms, as the Hg concentration in their tissues is commonly high. To assess the influence of food supply at two trophic levels, total Hg concentrations and carbon and nitrogen stable isotope ratios were determined in 7 species (4 teleosts, 2 sharks, and 1 crustacean) sampled on the upper part of the continental slope of the Gulf of Lions (Northwestern Mediterranean Sea), at depths between 284 and 816 m. Mean Hg concentrations ranged from 1.30 ± 0.61 to 7.13 ± 7.09 μg g− 1 dry mass, with maximum values observed for small-spotted catshark Scyliorhinus canicula. For all species except blue whiting Micromesistius poutassou, Hg... |

Abstract For a better interpretation of variants, evidence-based databases, such as ClinVar, compile data on the presumed relationships between variants and phenotypes. In this study, we aimed to analyze the pattern of sequencing depth in variants from whole-exome sequencing data in the 1000 Genomes project phase 3, focusing on the variants present in the ClinVar database that were predicted to affect protein-coding regions. We demonstrate that the distribution of the sequencing depth varies across different sequencing centers (pair-wise comparison, p < 0.001). Most importantly, we found that the distribution pattern of sequencing depth is specific to each facility, making it possible to correctly assign 96.9% of the samples to their sequencing center.... |

From 2010 to 2012, 246 data storage tags were deployed on European seabass in the Iroise Natural Marine Park, a marine protected area (MPA) off west Brittany, France. A return rate of 14.6% associated with long time series of data provided new information on fish ecology (e.g. maximum experienced depth greater than 225 m, temperature range 6.80–21.87°C). Depth and temperature series were used to infer individual migration using an innovative hidden Markov model (HMM) especially developed for seabass geolocation. Reconstructed fish tracks revealed that seabass is a partially migratory species, as individuals exhibited either long-distance migrations towards the Bay of Biscay or the Celtic Sea, or residency behaviour in the Iroise Sea. Fidelity to summer... |

ABSTRACT We studied the influence of environmental variables associated with three water depths (2, 6 and 10 m) on shell growth, soft tissues dry mass (STDM) and survival of the Caribbean winged oyster Pteria colymbus (Roding, 1798). chlorophyll-a (Chl-a), dissolved oxygen, particulate organic matter (POM) and temperature were studied at each depth. Oysters were placed in 135 plastic baskets with five individuals in each basket. Three baskets at each depth were chosen at monthly intervals for measurements of biometric parameters, biofouling, and survival. At the end of the study, dry mass of the individuals grown at 10 m was significantly lower (Kruskal-Wallis non-parametric test KW, P < 0.05) with the highest values of STDM corresponding to oysters... |

Abstract Plantain is the fourth most important crop in the world, considered as a basic and export product in Ecuador. The root distribution of three plantain cultivars (Musa AAB) grown in Ecuador was evaluated at the “Río Suma” Experimental Farm, “Laica Eloy Alfaro de Manabí” University, 0º15’ S, 79º26’ W. Plantain cultivars were ‘Barraganete’, ‘Curare Enano’ and ‘Dominico Hartón’, and root distribution was determined according to the phenology of plants (10, 20, 30, 40 leaves (inflorescence) and harvest), seeded at 2.5 m x 1.8 m. In a completely randomized block design with five replicates, five plants·cultivar-1 were selected for each evaluation. Root distribution was carried out in soil profiles between rows. The greatest root distribution occurred 20... |

Specimens of Rioraja agassizi were collected monthly off Santos, Southeast Brazil, between latitudes 23º37'S and 27º40'S, from March, 2005 to March, 2006. A total number of 278 males and 1023 females were captured. Observed depth range was 10-120 m, being the species absent above 120 m. Sex ratio significantly favored females. The entire length range of R. agassizi was observed. Females ranged in length from 16.0 to 59.4 cm and males from 13.0 to 47.2 cm. Mean female length was significantly higher than that of males. For grouped length distributions, asymmetry patterns were observed in both sexes. Length-width functions were sexually dimorphic. Males with lengths < 24.5 cm were relatively wider than females. Length-total weight curves were... |
